"Let me begin with an orthodox introduction. My name is Makoto Naegi.
My appearance, as you can see, is just your regular average high school student.
    Inside, I'm just the same...
My personality, my skills, my school record... There is absolutely nothing special about them."

First impressions are usually an everlasting mark on how someone perceives a character, and more importantly, how they see themselves. For Naegi, he sees himself as plain, ordinary; a normal Japanese high school student that you can see almost anywhere. In layman's terms: average. And yet, this trait that Naegi sees himself as is not all there is to him. Not in the slightest bit, in fact. When it comes down to it, in the beginning, Naegi comes off as rather awkward - he's like a small puppy, in a sense - the kind that's rather shy, yet is easily seen through. Seriously, this boy is a literal open book; he's predictable to the point where even a high school idol can pinpoint exactly what he's thinking without him even saying a single word. Basically, he pretty much wears his heart on his sleeve. Of course, there are times where he isn't predictable - for example, when he ruins Enoshima's plans, or decides to trust in Kirigiri - those are things that some people couldn't see him doing, and yet, he does it anyway.

Of course, because Naegi himself is an ordinary teenage boy, he is prone to being embarrassed by girls. It is implied that at the beginning of the game, in chapter one, that Naegi might have had some sort of crush on Sayaka Maizono, as he tends to get nervous around her and even details greatly in his monologue exactly how nice she smells, how she looks like a doll, amongst other things as well. Even in the scene where he ends up peeking on the girls in the springs he finds himself doubting if doing so was the right decision, although he knows he can't take it back now.

While Naegi may be known as the Super High School Level (SHSL) Good Luck, his luck tends to end up in a lot of bad luck, meaning that he has a tendency to get screwed over by situations that are out of his personal control. However, Naegi himself is an optimist; someone who believes in hope in spite of any despair, as he even says himself: "No matter what you do to me...I will never fall into despair!" And because of his nature as an optimist, regardless of what is thrown at him, along with his natural good hearted nature is what brings people to form a close bond with him and actually, genuinely like Naegi, regardless of how "ordinary" he finds himself, and regardless of the personalities he goes up against. It's because of this that allows him to be rather down to earth and while he might get a little nervous when talking to others at times, he is ultimately willing to speak to anyone who approaches him and vice versa. He likes to approach other people and is very supportive of those who he considers his friends. Basically, he is exactly the kind of person you'd expect him to be: someone who would never give up, regardless of the dire circumstances that are placed upon him.

"I... I think even if you’re worried, we probably won’t need anything for a while.
And also, if the time comes when we do....
      I... I will protect you..."

However, regardless of his good hearted nature, that does not make him a complete pushover. Although Naegi himself is physically weak, as he is no fighter or athlete, he is able to stand up for others when they're in trouble. In various occasions in the game, he isn't afraid to speak his mind, regardless of how nervous he may be - for example, he yells at Mondo to tell him not to fight with Togami, and even attempts to punch Monokuma, too. Just because he's generally nice and sweet regardless of the person does not mean that he won't fight - whether it's verbally or physically - if he thinks that person is wrong.

To Naegi, nevertheless, friends are important to him. He cares about them deeply to the point where he'd protect them; he would even trust them to the point where he'd almost do anything for them - for example, when Monokuma is using one of the trials to forcefully weed out Kirigiri and make her the "true culprit" (regardless of the fact that she isn't) Naegi doesn't out her when he notices a contradiction in her words; instead, he keeps the secret, deciding that there's no way that she would do something as horrible as killing. He puts all of his trust in her because of everything that they've been through together. Of course, that isn't to say that he's going to blindly trust anyone, either, although his character flaw shows that he is definitely willing to trust people. He wants to trust them; even if that may be a naive way of thinking. Truthfully, he knows that the past doesn't define them - it's the future that he righteously believes in that makes all the difference.

Another thing to note is that even though Naegi himself is a rather decent conversationalist and is willing to talk with even the most scary looking people, it does not mean that he's a smooth talker. At least, when he's not being serious. In fact, he tends to stammer quite a bit; even more so when he's around a girl he really likes, or ends up talking about something that's just outright awkward and causes silence to hang in the air. Regardless of this, however, Naegi shows a great understanding of other people's personalities to the point where he's perceptive - for example, he easily notices that Togami seems rather relaxed during the entirety of case two and the fact that he's egging him on - and actually, genuinely cares about learning about other people - whether it be their interests, hobbies, or something small. He likes learning about other people - especially potential friends - and his caring even extends to the fact that he will memorize the most tedious, small details that a normal person wouldn't usually catch onto.

"I don't want to yield to someone like you! I don't want to lose to someone like you!
I won't! For the sake of everyone who was killed by you!"

Although Naegi seems to be the type of person who seems shy and awkward at first, because of the seeds of hope that have grown inside of him that sometimes he can have outbursts of anger; he gets angry when Monokuma talks shit about his family, and even his friends. When he gets angry, it's never entirely about himself - it's usually always about other people. His bravery when it comes to putting himself out there, regardless of the consequences. All of his beliefs, his hopes, and his friends come first before anything else.

And this especially shines through in the second Dangan Ronpa game, when he recklessly defies the Future Foundation - the group that had saved them - in order to not only save the Remnants of Despair by placing them in the Neo World Program, but he also jumps into the program at the very end to initiate the Forced Shutdown, knowing full well of the consequences of even doing such a thing. His protectiveness towards people he cares about - even those he doesn't know fairly well - is both a weakness and strength; it goes to show just how far Naegi is willing to jump in order to help others, even if it's at the cost of his own life. But he's fine with that because he always has this firm belief in the others that they will follow through for him.

"Naegi's fidgety personality has graciously revealed itself."

While Naegi may come off as ordinary and plain, do not underestimate his intelligence. He manages to notice even the smallest of things, and can, with hard work, solve mysteries as well as find and reveal contradictions or see even the smallest of things. For example, in the last trial, he notices (albeit belatedly) a small label on the side of the tarp. However, even if he is able to solve these mysteries, it doesn't mean that he is some super genius; he has his limits and there are even things that he can miss, things that can easily go over his head.

"So what do you say, Oowada-kun...? If my conclusions are wrong, please tell me...?
      I won’t mind... if they’re wrong..."

Of course, this intelligence doesn't come without a price. The idea that Naegi has to investigate his friends' deaths and find out that yet another one of his friends killed them sickens him. The idea in of itself is something that Naegi hates, and time and time again does he wish that he was wrong. Distrusting his friends isn't something that he likes, and it's definitely something that he would rather live without.

In the end, Naegi may come off as an ordinary, or even plain teen, but he honestly isn't without his qualities. He is endlessly optimistic, a nice guy who believes in his friends until the very end and is willing to go through hoops in order to help them, even at the cost of his self preservation. And while he is rather down to earth and kind most of the time, if something horrible happens that he finds himself disagreeing with, he isn't going to simply sit still and let things happen; he's going to actually take action. He is also a rather smart kid, being able to solve mysteries, see through contradictions and even spot the most tedious of things - even if he's not as good as a detective as Kirigiri. Basically, he's someone befitting of the title of "Super High School Level Hope", as someone who is never willing to give up to the despair that is tossed his way.

Skills/Abilities: Naegi is, for the most part, rather mundane. The only skill he has is that he tends to have horrible luck that winds up eventually becoming good luck, which is why he is the "Super High School Level Good Luck".

Magic Weapon: A pen that turns into a small pistol. On the side of the holster is a diamond which is there to encourage mana consumption. Instead of shooting regular bullets, the gun itself shoots metal BB pellets. The gun can hold up to seven rounds and the strength of each shot varies depending on the amount of mana placed. The stronger the shot, the more mana consumed. If Naegi runs out of mana, the gun can still shoot the pellets, but the strength of them will be nil.

The gun's other ability can be utilized by pressing on the gem while shooting; instead of shooting a bullet in this case, the gun shoots out physical mana to dispel illusions. Of course, doing such costs a hefty amount of mana, so he can only do this up to five times a day.
    Carrier: A small panda.
