[Today was just not Serena's day.

Whether it were a stroke of bad luck, a coincidence, or some sort of uncanny fate that caused her to somehow lose her blue ribbon after participating in one of the Hoenn contests. That was something that was really important to her. In fact, she could even say that it was probably one of the most important things to her, period.

But the fact that it was somehow gone put her into a frenzy to the point where she couldn't help but panic. And that panic was rather obvious in her face as she darted off. Of course, she wasn't running so fast that she'd bump into someone, as she was trying to get information off of people, but it was definitely a sight to behold.

Which is why when she runs into Paul, it's clear that she's a little out of breath as she asks the single question, her voice slightly raised:]

Um, excuse me! You didn't happen to see a blue ribbon around here, have you?
battlestandby: (This'd better be important. Loser.)

No worries!

[Paul probably should have expected she'd come running back to him if he stayed where he was. Still doesn't make him any less annoyed... it's a goddamned ribbon.

Well, he tried to be civil. Apparently now Paul saw it fit to break that facade and just be himself.]

You're thanking me again? Stop acting like that thing's some precious family heirloom already. If it's beyond saving, there's nothing you can do about it.
battlestandby: (Yes...?)

“One of a kind”?

[Skeptic McSkepterson feels you are BSing him wholesale, missy.]

They’re a dime a dozen.
battlestandby: (I am truly humbled.)

If I had a dollar every time I heard that line...
battlestandby: (I can do this all day you know.)

Saying it’s true and believing it’s true are two different things. I can objectively say that’s a ribbon that can be replaced if it’s ruined. This pedestal you’re putting on whoever gave you this thing, that’s completely subjective, as well as your insistence that some strip of fabric is too “special” to replace.
battlestandby: (That's reality for you.)

[Paul is quiet for a moment, perhaps just to annoy the hell out of Serena.]

Sentimental value is one of society's worst machinations. That's how expensive things get sold. That's why people end up becoming hoarders. That's why people act like idiots because they hold sentimental value in the highest regard, above absolutely everything else.

.. Maybe I'm being too harsh. You are just a victim of the system.
