[ After all that the club has been through, it's almost surreal that things have gone back to normal. Well, as normal as things ever really get in Hinamizawa. Club activities have resumed, and while the newcomers have yet to reach their full potential, their presence certainly has made punishment games even more unpredictable.

Today's club meeting has been a series of elimination matches in different games, and in honor of a certain former class representative's birthday, Mion has been granted the power to choose each round's game. Yet in the end, as has happened so many times before, the newcomers could only hang on for so long. Ultimately, the finals had come down to the club's veterans.

Keiichi takes his seat at the grouped up desks, the last one to arrive after having doled out punishments to his vanquished opponents. He'd predicted this would be how things would end, even if the newcomers had put up more of a fight than expected. ]

Alright, former class representative. What are we doing for this round's activity?

[ Whatever it is, he's sure it's something good. While the club members have enjoyed the activities he's picked out since inheriting the club's leadership, he has to admit that he likes it when Mion picks the club activities. Her unpredictability is pretty refreshing. ]

Since it's just the five of us... let's up the ante just a little bit, shall we? There's a new game that I want to try that I heard is a little simple.

[She stands up and heads towards the closet before taking out a box.

It seems to be some sort of tabletop game.]

I'll explain the game. Since there're five of us, eight cards will be in play. Some of them have roles, some of them won't.

To make things simple, the roles I've decided for this round are... let's see. One werewolf, one seer, three villagers, one troublemaker, one robber, and one tanner.

Basically, gameplay goes as follows: I'll shuffle the cards, and everyone picks one. They're brand new, so don't worry. That does not mean to not try your best at winning though, okay? That especially goes for you, Kei-chan. Once you get your card, you look at it and memorize what card you can and place your card face down. This is the only chance you have at looking at your card the entire game, so make sure you remember what you started with, okay?

Everyone will close their eyes and then we'll have our moderator - ah, that's Shion, by the way - who will tell when everyone will have to open their eyes and do their specific night action. Anybody caught openly cheating during the night phase will immediately be disqualified from the game. [That means to not open your eyes when you're not supposed to, although any subtle cheating is okay in her book.] Then, once all the roles are called out, regardless of whether someone has the card or it's in the center three cards, everyone opens their eyes and we debate on who might be the werewolf for five minutes. That's pretty much the basic gameplay.

As for the roles themselves, the seer gets to either see another person's card or two cards from the center; the troublemaker swaps two players cards, the robber swaps their own card and another player's. Town team wins if they catch the werewolf. Werewolf wins if a town member is killed. And the tanner only wins if they're killed themselves.

Oh - and the game is only one round, so everything is reset afterwards. If we have more than one player that wins, we'll do a sudden death game after. Any questions?

[ Keiichi listens to the explanation without interruption, though he bristles some what at Mion singling him out. He thinks he grasps the basic rules, as well as Mion's admonishment that the players not sneak a peek during the night phase. Shion will probably gleefully call out anyone she catches cheating, and there's no way he can try to bribe her, so he'll have to think of some other way to tilt the odds in his favor.

But a social deduction game? That's his specialty. He wasn't called the Magician of Words for nothing. ]

Sounds simple enough. The odds are that someone will be the werewolf, but not so good that you can count on it. So, it's a risky move to try to accuse someone else.

[ Unless, he doesn't say out loud, one is trying to draw attention to themselves. But even that might seem too obvious. ]

Don't underestimate its simplicity, Kei-chan. It's a lot harder than you'd expect... fufu.

[Anyway, she'll take out the role cards, flip them all face up so that the group knows she isn't lying about what role cards they'll be using before flipping them back face down.

"Ooh, it looks like this is going to be a tough one, a tough one! I won't go easy on everyone..."

"Mii. I'll do my best as well."

"Ohohoho~! I do hope that Keiichi-san gets the tanner card. It'd be fun to see him talk his way out of that one."]

Now, everyone - pick your cards and take a good look at it, okay? This is the only time you'll get to see that card at all.

You have one minute to look at your card, and then you will put your card face down, close to the center so it's within everyone's reach.

Werewolf - wake up. You may look at two cards from the center. Once you have done so, close your eyes.

[Obviously, Mion's not an obvious cheat so she's going to mostly play by the rules. Although she does make some noises as she stretches her arms out.]

Ahh, that was a good rest... I should honestly say good morning, hm?

["Mii. Good morning."

"... do you really think that the werewolf is really among us? Do you? Do you?"

"I personally think that I heard some shuffling around... there's probably someone causing some trouble in this town."]

[ While keeping his eyes closed, Keiichi tries to listen for the sounds of movement as each role is called out. Unfortunately, he knows some of the rustling will be meant to distract him. In fact, he makes a few noises himself, though he focuses on keeping his quiet and below the table. The robber would need to reach to grab the other cards, which means their feet wouldn't be able to stay in place. He can't tell if anyone else is moving, and if there is a robber, they'll probably know what he's trying to do.

Which just means that he's trying to sow discord, just like everyone else. Maybe that's not the role a villager should be playing, but he can't count on being able to convince people not to kill him. ]

There's a simple solution, isn't there? Everyone says what role they are. We can expect that nobody will admit to being the werewolf, but that's alright. We'll hear everybody out first.

[ This is about more than just trying to assert himself as an innocent villager. Mion usually takes the lead in situations like this, but if he robs her of that chance, he robs her of the initiative. ]

As for me, assuming nobody's stolen my identity, I should just be an innocent villager.

[ He looks to the others, then, giving them a chance to speak up... and maybe, if he's given them enough rope, they'll strangle themselves with it. ]

Oh? I think Satoko has a point. But Mion should be the one to answer that question. It's not enough to know that she was a robber, assuming she's telling the truth in the first place, because that's not her role anymore.

[Being rather new to Fuyuki City, Kotarou had been hearing strange reports on the new about random gas leak explosions that occur at night. Even though it would've been easier to dismiss this as some issues going on with the city pipe work. There was just something that made Kotarou's curiosity tingle. It was usually this curiosity of his that gotten him neck deep into dangerous situations.

He probably shouldn't had been walking the streets at night and trying to uncover more to these incidents. But he couldn't help and feel that there was something 'supernatural' behind it all. Like attracted like as the saying goes... Kotarou wasn't entirely 'normal' himself, so it was only natural that he'd end up in bizarre incidents. Back in the day, he'd always read reports about UMAs in town and go forth to kill them. The old habits of the "Earth Saving Hunter" hasn't changed at all.]

It was around here... Wasn't it? That's what the reports said.

[Sneaking over the yellow tape, Kotarou found himself walking through a destroyed area in the neighborhood where it looked like the wreckage had only extended further outward into a field.]

This doesn't look like a gas explosion, though. Feels like there was a major battle here.

[And what he'll find is a girl in outdoors clothes late at night in the field, seeing him. While it might be strangely late for someone that looks like a child to be out alone in the dark hours of the night in Fuyuki.]

[This girl looked almost too young to be running around in a dangerous spot like that. Kotarou couldn't help and crack a bit of a sarcastic smile as he steps closer.]

I was just searching for buried treasure. I heard this place was popular with stuff like that.

[A bit of a white lie. As much as he wouldn't minded finding treasure, Kotarou was seeking something bigger if possible.]

I don't know about that. Because you're the one who might die here, mister.

[He gulps at the sound of her words. A tingle crawls up his spine... Kotarou's instincts were sharper than most, but he couldn't just back out. If worst came to worst, then'd he use his 'superpower' to get out of a jam.]

... It sounds like you know something about what's on here. [Another step closer.] I'm not here to pick a fight or anything. I just wanna know what's going in this town I'm staying in.

[He'll take another step closer and bends down to Illya's level. She seemed to be on guard, so Kotarou decides to give her a friendly smile.]

She falters slightly, hanging her head for a moment to hide the torn up expression that flits into her eyes full of worries before deciding to test the waters, walking closer to accept the hug in hopes that it's real and not just a fleeting figment of her imagination.]

( It's not a privilege he expected in his ever shortening lifespan-- yet alone felt he deserved. Yet here she was, riding atop his shoulders, donned in a yukata he helped her select for the summer festival.

It's the kind of experience Iri would have wanted for her, he thinks. Regretting that he'd not taken off with the both of them while he still had the opportunity.

Attempting to put that thought out of his mind, he had much to look forward to, did he not? What with his limited mobility, he didn't much get out these days. But with Illya's reentry into his life, the last thing he wanted was to feel as if he were rotting away at home. It was the extra push he needed. And frankly, he was thankful for it.

For now, they've stopped in front of one of the many festival booths, featuring a shooting game many stuffed animals as prizes. It's been ages since he's handled a gun-- even as a toy, but: )

( There's a sheepishness to his laugh. Years ago, a game like this wouldn't have presented much of a challenge to him. But his magic is not what it once was, or, for that matter, his aim. )
